Methodology

The Chaos Index is a media metric, not a forecast and not a financial signal. Values currently shown on the site are demo data.

Principles

  1. Fixed, versioned criteria

    Each reading is computed by a documented formula. Every published value records the methodology version it was produced with.

  2. Independent primary sources

    A story counts as confirmed by the number of independent primary sources, not by the number of outlets repeating one report.

  3. Insufficient data is a valid answer

    When inputs do not meet the minimum criteria, the index shows “insufficient data” instead of a number.

  4. Satire is always labelled

    Satirical posts are marked as satire and link to the original reporting they are based on.
